Shiba Inu dogs are one of Japan’s native canine breeds and boast striking resemblances to foxes, making them extremely energetic pets. These athletic, self-confident breeds enjoy challenges such as agility, AKC Fast CAT and Rally canine sports; though wary of strangers they typically become affectionate toward family members and longtime acquaintances over time.

Shiba dogs were originally used for hunting small game in Japan’s rugged mountainous regions, earning them the name “Shiba Inu”, or brushwood dog. This name refers both to their hunting terrain as well as the red color of their coats resembling trees and shrubs found there.

Shiba Inus may present more difficulty when it comes to training than other breeds, yet that’s part of what makes them such rewarding pets to own. These intelligent, quick learners can sometimes be stubborn; as independent creatures they would rather do their own thing rather than follow commands from you. Therefore it is crucial that their owners treat them with patience and consistency for successful training; attending obedience classes or working with a professional dog trainer could make training easier for both you and your Shiba Inu!

Shiba are known to be reserved with strangers, yet very devoted to their families and children, often described as puppy-like well into old age. Younger children may need supervision when around Shibas as these breeds may become impatient easily; basic commands and socialization should be taught from an early age for optimal success.

Shiba dogs stand out from other breeds with their signature curled tail. Not only is this characteristic beautiful to look at; it helps keep Shibas warm in cold winter temperatures by covering their chests and keeping their noses tucked inside their fur, as well as being an indicator of their independence and daring personalities.

Shibas are widely loved because of their signature high-pitched vocalization known as the ‘Shiba scream,’ which they let out whenever they are excited, frustrated or unhappy – similar to howling or yiping! This trait has earned this breed its title of being drama queens!

Shiba are highly healthy dogs. While prone to allergies, this breed can often be prevented by keeping their environment clean and eliminating fleas from their environment. Eye conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, entropion (eyelids that turn inward), hip dysplasia or luxating patellas should all be checked by visiting your veterinarian – any indications should be examined promptly since undiagnosed and treated conditions could eventually lead to arthritis and other health problems further down the road. By providing plenty of exercise, mental stimulation and love you’ll ensure long term companionship and good health!
